Visa updateAustralia
Australia plans to make a condition that prevents most further visa applications inside the country standard on visitor visas. Anyone hoping to stay longer after a visit must therefore check when planning their trip whether their visa permits such an application.

| Country | Australia |
|---|---|
| Who is affected | Travellers with an Australian visitor visa who intend to apply in Australia for another type of stay or a longer stay. |
| Previous rule | A No Further Stay condition can already prevent a further visa application while the holder is in Australia. The conditions of the visa actually granted are decisive. |
| New rule | An extension to all visitor visas has been announced. The official overview gives no separate start date; the announcement alone does not change an existing visa condition. |
The government has announced an expansion of the “No Further Stay” condition. This means that travellers with this condition cannot apply for most other temporary or permanent visas while they remain in Australia. It is particularly relevant to people who enter as visitors and then intend to apply in Australia for a longer stay, for example with their partner.
The official overview of migration policy changes describes extending the condition to all visitor visas as a planned measure. It gives no separate start date for this measure; the overall package is to be introduced in stages. The announcement does not establish a blanket ban already applying to every visitor.
The condition already exists. Your visa grant letter or the government's online VEVO service shows whether it applies to your visa. According to Home Affairs' explanation, affected travellers can apply for other visas to return after leaving Australia. Having the condition waived inside Australia requires an application and special circumstances; submitting the request alone does not remove it.
For the electronic visitor visa, eVisitor, the department currently still describes the possibility of applying for another visa for a longer stay, subject to eligibility. The eVisitor itself cannot be extended. Anyone planning a subsequent stay should therefore establish the appropriate procedure before travelling and check the conditions of the visa actually granted. The overview of visas for Australia helps explain the visitor visa process; it does not establish an entitlement to a further visa.
